Too soon. For that cluster-fuck in the fog?

It will always be too soon.

That was a one man clusterfuck that killed a whole lot of people.

It was plenty more than 1 man, even if he was the biggest issue.

That one? And AF447. They both deserve a special place in our hearts for “How does one SOB manage to kill hundreds of people through complete incompetence ?”

Germanwings? Specific intent.
TWA 800? Chain of mistakes
ET/LionAir MAX? Monstrously long chain of mistakes...

But, in modern aviation, it’s remarkably hard for one asshole’s incompetence to kill so many people. It takes a real commitment to ineptitude to accomplish it.

I’m no expert, but I do put some blame on Airbus for AF447. When you have a system where on pilot can be putting in an entirely opposite command input while the other pilot has no idea what he is doing, that’s a problem.

Yeah. I hate that control scheme... which they are committed to never fixing. OTOH, I think the recent safety stats show that a A32x is a safer ride than any 737. And, (including the rudder fiasco, the metal fatigue fiasco, the MAX fiasco) in the arc of the 737 program they’ve actually had quite a number of really ugly design flaws. That rudder thing was damn hard to figure out.

In Airbus’s defense? Had all the pilots simply LEFT the cockpit for 5 minutes and got un caffe et croissant? The neutral handling and the native stall recovery would have let the plane descend to a height wherein the pitot tubes would have melted away, and proper airspeed would have registered again.  In this case all it took was Bonin’s incredible commitment to ignoring several hundred STALL warnings of various types.  That takes an extra special devotion to dumbassery.  Above and beyond, really.

I’m definitely going to have to break down and buy the complete set at some point.

I have mine sitting on the table being me, and it was totally worth it. I don’t know what they are going for these days, but it’s actually more brilliant than I remembered.

I had a similar discussion with a guy who said he was an A320 pilot (I had no reason to doubt him), and he said that all other things aside, there was something “civilized” about being able to put your tray of food on your lap at mealtime.

Two things Oppo will never tell you to do:

1) Don’t do something dumb involving cars

2) Don’t buy Calvin and Hobbes books

“... there was something “civilized” about being able to put your tray of food on your lap at mealtime.”

How about you fly the damn plane, how’s that for civilized?

What is the Van Zanten reference?

Van Zanten was the captain of the KLM 747 who was so impatient to take off in the fog that he ignored ground control and his first officer and   crashed into a Pan Am 747 at Tenerife . He killed 583 people, along with himself.
